Last year, (July 23-28, 2019), we flew in to Beijing, China to compete for the International Science Drama Competition 2019. This is an annual event that aims to promote Science through drama and allows the participants to incorporate their passion for science into acting. I served as one of the judges in the competition and together with me were two of my museum colleagues (Ms. Maan and Mikee Angela ) and our country's representatives, students from H. Bautista Elementary School (HBES) in Marikina City. This year's theme was "Chemistry makes life better.", in line with the United Nations declaration that 2019 is the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements.

The journey that HBES went through was truly an inspiring one and simply showed that we can achieve something that could change the lives of these kids. They had to initiate fundraising campaigns in order to gather funds that were used for the processing of their travel documents, accommodations, food, etc. It was actually their first passport, first visa, and first international trip!

BHES presented "The Clue to the Perfect Shoe", an original play about the pioneers of the Marikina shoe industry and all the wonderful science that created the defining feature of the city's identity.

Each participating countries has a representative judge, but as a general rule, we cannot give a score to our own country which I think is fair and necessary. It is also a good gauge if our entry is good enough as compared to others I have seen.

All the finalists from different countries delivered an outstanding performance that made the judges' deliberation of winners very difficult. We had to gather in one room to discuss each performances' strength and points for improvements. Decisions per category including the votes for the Outstanding Male and Female Performers was not unanimous but somehow we all agreed in the list of the winners. They all have the chance to win but the moment was given to the ones who truly deserve it.

We got the Merit Award but hey boy, our very own Zeek Bornilla was named as the Outstanding Male Performer (Best Actor!) in the Junior Category. One of the judges said that Zeek has the stage presence and is not only good in his role but he felt that the on-stage leadership to bring the whole cast together is more outstanding.

If there's one wish I could have for next year, I hope we can gather more support so we can send in more students to represent our country in each category. We really had outstanding stories/script even in the previous two years that we were joining this competition but I guess we fell short in terms of production design. It's really expensive to produce and transport props abroad.

We may have not won yet, but we have already raised our flag there.

For the very first time, Starbucks Philippines recently collaborated with a local artist for their new set of merchandise. They partnered with the world-renowned, multi-disiplinary artist Patrick Cabral in a collection that draws inspiration from the Sarimanok, a mythical bird of the Maranao people from Mindanao.

I first learned about Cabral when I came across an article at the WWF website 2 years ago where they featured intricate paper sculptures of the world's most threatened or endangered species like tamarraw, rhino, sea turtle and iberian lynx. Cabral was also included in "New Strong", a regional campaign by Starbucks where he created a detailed sculptures of iconic animals that symbolizes some of the world's coffee-growing regions last 2018.

Cabral blends a cultural symbol with his maximalist style, creating an intricate and exuberant design. The combination of white, black and gold make this Sarimanok collections look very elegant. The merchandise is available in all stores starting tomorrow, June 9.

With about 7,641 islands, the Philippines has just enough flavors to match, all fused together in the country’s cuisine. Along with these diverse flavors, come a myriad of fun moments- experimenting with more than 15 ingredients in halo-halo, eating with bare hands during boodle parties, enjoying five meals a day including merienda, all the while bonding with friends and family whether there’s a ‘handaan’ or a big gathering, or just a simple get-together.

For Filipinos, eating is an experience to be enjoyed and shared with everyone. Their friendly nature and exceptionally tasty meals spell joy and comfort, welcoming everyone, even strangers, to the table as family. This is the culture that the Department of Tourism aims to share to the world through its new campaign "Eats. More fun in the Philippines".

“More and more people are travelling not just to see the sights, but to discover new cuisine. And we believe that one of the best ways to explore the Philippines and experience the country’s culture is through our numerous and unique food offerings. This is why we decided to create a campaign that truly highlights the Philippines as a great food destination. We couldn’t have found a better partner in this fun and exciting campaign than the country’s pride and most beloved fast food chain, Jollibee” shared Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.

As a proudly Pinoy brand that continues to create buzz around the world, Jollibee is all out in supporting this food tourism campaign that will put the spotlight on our unique dishes that we proudly offer to tourists around the globe.

“We are very proud and happy to support the team of DOT led by Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat on this noteworthy campaign. We believe that the Filipino food truly has what it takes to be a globally-known cuisine—this is what we have been championing as a brand as well. Even as Jollibee has been bringing langhap-sarap food to countries all over the world, we want to do our part as a proudly Filipino company to make people more  aware of the many unique and sumptuous Pinoy dishes we have, and in doing so invite travelers to taste the Joy of eating first-hand,” shared Jollibee Global Brand Chief Marketing Officer and PH Marketing Head Francis Flores.

Eats. More Fun in the Philippines. The Department of Tourism partners with the country’sleading fast-food chain, Jollibee, for an exciting food tourism campaign that showcases the richness and diversity of Filipino cuisine and the joy of eating in the Philippines. In photo (L-R) are Jollibee, Mikey Bustos, Jollibee Foods Corporation CEO Ernesto Tanmantiong, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, JFC Philippines Country Head Joseph Tanbuntiong, Jollibee Philippines President JJ Alano, Jollibee Global Brand CMO Francis Flores, Chef Jordan Andino, and Chef JP Anglo.

Eats. More fun in the Philippines.
As the main highlight of the campaign, DOT and Jollibee collaborated on a fun and appetizing mini documentary which showcases the country’s rich cuisine and dining culture. It features award-winning chefs JP Anglo and Jordan Andino, as well as top YouTube content creator and comedian Mikey Bustos. Each ambassador added their own flavor and expertise to the mix.

Both chefs champion Filipino cuisine. Hailing from local foodie destination Bacolod, JP is the chef behind well-loved restaurants Sarsa Kitchen + Bar, Kafé Batwan, and Liberation Shawarma. He is known for elevating the flavors of Pinoy classics by adding creative tweaks. Born in Canada and raised in California, Chef Jordan took inspiration from his Filipino grandmother's traditional recipes and gives them a contemporary twist at Flip Sigi, his New York-based Filipino taqueria.

In the video featuring JP and Jordan, unique and delicious Filipino food is front and center with insights from the two expert chefs on the local cuisine.

“I would say that Filipino cuisine and the Filipino dining experience gives more soul than most countries. When you eat Filipino food, you taste love, family, and tradition, and that happens in every recipe, in every restaurant. Not a lot of cultures are able to do that,” said Chef Jordan.

Speaking about the sumptuous taste of our food offerings, Chef JP also shared the country’s stand-out delicacies, “Our lechon is exceptional—we’re one of the countries that do the roasting technique really well. Our grilled chicken, the inasal, it is also so excellent and can definitely go against other grilled chickens in the world.”  He also commends the unsung heroes behind the rich, local culinary scene, “I look up to the street vendors like the guy who’s been making batchoy for two decades in a market in Iloilo. I think we should celebrate them more and give them a venue. These guys are the real deal and as chefs, we get our inspiration from them.”

Mikey Bustos sprinkles some humor into the stew by depicting the quirks of Filipino dining and showing that eating is more fun in the Philippines. He points out the importance of local food in understanding the culture and people.  According to Mikey, “I believe that appreciating food involves context and Filipino food is designed for Filipino life. If you really want to learn about a country, you have to eat and experience that whole thing.”

The Philippines’ jolliest chef, Jollibee, also joins Mikey, Chef JP, and Chef Jordan with some langhap-sarap favorites to share such as Chickenjoy, Jolly Spaghetti, and the Aloha Burger. “Jollibee’s iconic. Everybody knows Jollibee, so, I think the tie-up is perfect. It’s good because it’s a great entry to Filipino culture because you have so many non-Filipinos stepping into Jollibee stores and they realize it’s more than just fast food, they also experience Filipino cuisine,” added Mikey.

A fun, feast-ival of flavors
To formally launch the campaign and to premiere “Eats. More Fun in the Philippines” digital material, DOT and Jollibee jointly hosted the ultimate feast-ival at the Islas Pinas in Pasay City.

Apart from DOT Secretary Berna, Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) Chief Executive Officer Ernesto Tanmantiong, JFC Philippines Country Head Joseph Tanbuntiong, Jollibee Philippines President JJ Alano, Jollibee Global Chief Marketing Officer Francis Flores, and DOT Assistant Secretary for Branding and Marketing Communications Howard Uyking were also present to show their support for the campaign.

Guests were guided through the expansive food and heritage village by Chef JP, Chef Jordan, Mikey, and of course, Jollibee. Each featured section had local performances and food offerings for guests to experience while the campaign endorsers shared their personal stories. By the end of the tour, executives, endorsers, and attendees came together for the grand feast, laid out on banana leaves ala-boodle party style.

Bai Hotel Cebu - Lobby - Interior Title

Cebu has always been one of the country’s prime destination because of its historical significance, the colorful Sinulog Festival and Mactan’s famous beaches and dive sites. However, it becomes even more remarkable when they open to the public different tours such as the whale shark watching tour, canyoneering and trekking to their numerous Gatorade-like waterfalls. Since then, the number of tourist coming in and out of Cebu keeps growing and growing. In addition, with that volume of tourist arriving whether for business and leisure, it is the best time and a good opportunity to any hotel chains to open their doors and provide their first-rate services and facilities. That is exactly what my friends and I experienced when we stayed at the newest five star hotel in the city, Bai Hotel Cebu.

Bai Hotel Cebu - Driveway

Bai Hotel has 668 rooms, 12 conference and event venues and 8 dining options including a fine dining restaurant making them the biggest hotel in the whole Visayas and Mindanao today. This hotel is also a member of Worldhotels, an exclusive group of independent hotels around the globe.

We arrived passed midnight, straight from our office work and delayed flight, the staff assisted us and checking-in was so fast. Tired and hungry, we went straight to the Twilight, their roof deck lounge and bar that is accessible at the 23rd floor (open every Tuesday – Sunday from 6PM-2AM with 150 seating capacity). Their “gambas” was so good and so was their “chicharong bulaklak” that I requested for a cup of rice. I also had a glass of mojito. They said sleeping with full stomach is bad but the chow and cocktails we had was simply irresistible.
My friend and I woke up early and prepared for a morning commitment at the Executive Lounge at the 22nd floor (open every day from 6AM – 10PM and can accommodate up to 110 guests). There I met some of our friends and other new faces who arrived a day earlier than we did. It was fun as we shared stories other than travel, like how they manage to try the now infamous Keto diet and showbiz gossips, very travel bloggers right!? Just kidding!
My friend called me to prepare for lunch so I quickly freshen up. We went to Ume, a restaurant that serves an authentic a la carte Japanese cuisine in a smart casual ambience. My friends already ordered so I just shared with them since the servings were good for 3-4 persons. Oh! I ordered an extra bowl of ramen because I was craving for a soup. Ume is open Tues to Sun from 1130AM – 2:30PM and 6PM – 10PM.

Right after breakfast, while others were busy doing some little work, I went for a swim instead at the Infinity Outdoor Lap Pool. It is a 25-meter infinity pool overlooking the city skyline and has a pool bar that offers light snacks and drinks. The Pool Bar is located at the 21st floor and is open daily from 7AM to 10PM.

That afternoon, we went to the Temple of Leah, but it was raining so we were not able to stay longer. We went back to the hotel to rest and prepare for our dinner at our favorite lechon place in Cebu City, the Lechon Belly in Parkmall that is located just across the hotel. We let our friends tried our all-time favorite, of course the "spicy lechon belly”, “sinigang na lechon belly” and “dinuguan”. Men, we could not stop asking for more cups of rice. We also went to this bar called Octagon. It is just a few minute drive from the hotel and I heard that the door charge is waived for Bai Hotel guests; they will just show their room keycard. Koreans dominated the entire bar but it was sooooo fun as we also celebrated one of my friend’s birthday there.

The celebration continued at the Twilight where some of our Cebu-based friends joined us. There, more laughter and stories where shared over beer, cocktails and their best-seller “pulutan” platter.

 BAi Hotel - Twilight Roofdeck

We had a long night so when I woke for breakfast I quickly went at the Bai’s Café. They will assist you at the door entrance and please wait for your tables to be ready especially when the resto is full already, just like what happened to some of us. Bai Café can accommodate up to 460 guests.

However, I guess, during the time we were there, the hotel was fully booked, thus the waiting time. Before we check out, we had the chance to try their famous steak at Marble + Grain. We can attest that this steakhouse is famous because it was full of diners when we arrived. We just sat at the bar, ordered our drinks and waited for our steak to be served. I was not that sure if they accept reservations since the place is quite small but better call them or ask the hotel’s receptionist for more info. This steakhouse is located beside Ume and is open Tues-Sun from 1130AM – 2:30PM and 6PM –10PM.

Other restaurants and bars in the hotel’s vicinity that we would love to try next time are the following: Lobby Lounge – Open daily from 7AM – 12AM and can accommodate up to 126 guests Wallstreet Coffee + Bar – open 24/7   Bai Hotel Cebu - Lobby Lounge

Just so you know why Bai Hotel’s location is almost perfect because of the following reasons: 25 minutes from the airport, 10 minutes from the Port of Cebu, 25 minutes from Cebu Business Park and 20 minutes from Cebu I.T. Park. It is also near SM City and Parkmall, Chong Hua Hospital Mandaue and Cancer Centre and UCMed and many other historical landmarks of Cebu City.

Overall, our 2 night-stay at Bai Hotel was what I perfectly need for that weekend after a weeklong office works. It was also my chance to catch up with some of our friends whom we had travelled long time ago, as well as meeting new friends in the community of social media influencers. If you badly need a break and just want to stay and eat, Bai Hotel Cebu is on my list definitely.

Are you ready for this year's party in the infamous island of Boracay?

Laboracay 2018 is happening few months from now so watch out for the schedule of events and activities to be posted here soon. For the mean time please watch the video of our Laboracay experience last 2016.

I cannot remember the last time I saw myself in a clean-up drive (or if there is really one that I joined) but my recent participation together with some friends from the media and other volunteers in Free the Sea Movement 2 was something to remember and somehow inspires me to do more in the future. This year, Baler being the famous surfing spot in Luzon was the chosen venue for this said event.

Reef, a surf and lifestyle brand known worldwide, has partnered with WWF Philippines once again to promote responsible travel and environmental conservation thru this coastal clean-up drive. An early morning arrival at Nalu Surf Camp woke up my sleepy soul to excitement as it signaled the start of fun activities and at the same time the start of our own little way to help save the environment particularly the ocean.

Breakfast. Checked-in. Orientation.

We gathered near the Reef Booth for the official welcome of the participants. Mr. Ruel Bate from WWF Philippines gave us instruction on how we are going to start the activity. By groups, we started picking whatever trash we found along the shore then placed it in each corresponding sack. They taught us of proper waste segregation. To make it more exciting, the organizer placed some specially marked bottles somewhere and whoever gets the bottle will win a prize. I got one! ;)

In the middle of the clean-up drive, one local asked me where are we from and why are we doing it. That is when he realized and told his companion that, if tourists can do this in their own place, they should also start it themselves. I just smiled after hearing that.

In a span of almost an hour, covering a distance of around 1 kilometer, the whole team gathered a total number of seven sacks/bags of garbage, weighing a total of 98 kilograms and cigarette butts being the top trash collected in terms of numbers, 1,426 pcs to be exact. Yes! We counted and recorded everything.

I am hoping that one day; everybody will get on board and exert an extra effort in helping conserve the environment.

In the afternoon, participants enjoyed a free surfing lesson given by the instructors of Nalu Surf Camp. The list for that session was already full so my friends and I just grabbed a bottle of beer and enjoyed the whole afternoon talking and watching the people tumble on their surfboards yet patiently repeating until they perfect at least 3 seconds of riding the waves. The joy in their faces, priceless!

The night was still young, we all gathered at the resort’s lawn with some nicely printed roundie beach towels and pillows, some beer and overflowing rum complimented with salty pica-pica.  Ann Clerigo set the beach mood followed by the soulful music of Banna Harbera. The highlight of the night was when Reef turned over the cash donations worth P30,000 to WWF for their environmental programs. However, when the DJs dropped the beat, the millennials got wild and so were we.

I was having a hard time to wake up as I had barely slept from last night’s party. However, part of me was excited to join the next event, Surfari Beginners’ Competition. Four waves competed in the eliminations where the best two from each wave will then compete in the semis. The four top scorers will then face off in the finals. I made it to the semis, but was a little disappointed with my performance. That was the reason why my friends and I were so shocked after hearing my name announced for the finals. I did my best, but those three lovely women nailed me on the last spot. I had so much fun that I asked my instructor if I could borrow the surfboard to try surfing alone. Moreover, I realized, it was quite tough. Hahaha!

Tired but happy, and the after party was crazy! It started with the awarding of the all the winners and Baler’s lambanog drinking contest which I must say, dangerously soothing but dragged others to hell. Hahaha! It ended with the performances from indie rapper Eazyhead and party-starter remixes and originals from DJ Doms Badwolf & DJ CC.

That weekend made me look forward to do more volunteer works for the environment. I hope more people or organizations continuously initiate this type of corporate social responsibility and more volunteers will extend their hands to help. I am also looking forward to more surfing sessions which I really had fun doing ever since (if only surfing spots are closer to Manila). And to Reef, thank you so much for this opportunity. Til the next one. ( Siargao! Siargao! Siargao! )

Reef’s ‘Free the Sea Movement: Baler” was sponsored by Juan Light Studio, Bike King’s Kitchen, Madison’s Cafe Baler, La Patricia Hotel, Baler and The Shack, Baler with music partners Ann Clerigo, Banna Harbera, Eazyhead, DJ Domes Badwolf and DJ CC.
